Why We Don't Eat Enough Fiber

95% of Americans do not get the RDA of the beneficial and powerful macronutrient fiber to help combat some of the lifestyle pain-points they might have like low energy; the desire to lose weight successfully; or help to combat treatable diseases like Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity, for example.  Currently, the average person eats 15g of fiber per day when women should be consuming at least 25g and men 38g. Though this is masked as individual choices the fact is these choices collectively  become a national nightmare when the nation's healthcare budget bursts at the seams from the ever-growing epidemic of preventable and treatable diseases.  So, in the spirit of peeling away the layers, so you can see why a developed nation like America has such poor negative outcomes compared to its other developed world peers, this blog seeks to  acknowledge the fact that there are structural, and underlying drivers that cause and maintain this negative health outcomes system.  A system that is literally killing us all, chief among whom are Black and Brown people.  It will also inform you that while the forces that govern the food you eat are vast and entrenched and often beyond your control, with knowledge you have agency.  And with knowledge you can ensure your own positive health and wellness outcomes rather than leave it up to strangers.

 When you think of the word fiber what comes to mind?  Leafy greens; “tasteless;” “unappetizing;” Any of these sound familiar.  And if so, there is a perfectly logical reason why these negatively connotative words scroll across the limbic system of your brain – the area that supports functions like emotion, behavior, long term memory, for example –  when you hear the word fiber.  Simply put, you think of fiber negatively because the food industry has created another narrative for you: highly processed foods.  Whether they are the ones that are sold only in fast food establishments or the ones you buy in the national food chains and prepare yourself, the big food manufacturers and the politicians who subsidize them have all the incentive in the world to make highly processed foods more appealing than promote whole foods with fiber which is more beneficial for you.  And  you know what that incentive is?  Profits.  They strip whole foods of their nutrients, fill them with unhealthy fats, sugars and other harmful substances that the body was not meant to absorb, and do so cheaply in order to make gobs of profits to keep the mare running, so to speak.  Profit over people is the bane of the capitalist's existence.  So, it's not your fault if you have Type 2 Diabetes.  It's not your fault if you are obese and can't lose weight.  It's really not your fault if you have hypertension.

 According to Mark Bittman, a former New York Times food columnist in his January 9, 2021 opinion piece in the New York Times titled, “Why Your New Year’s Diet Is Doomed,” he characterized “the struggle for your health as being between you and the big food marketers that sell you junk – their most profitable products – and the politicians who enable them.”  In other words, it’s really not your fault you can’t lose the weight despite the many diets you’ve tried.

 And to get even more granular, a recent study cited in Gutbliss linked the causal relationship of highly processed foods and negative health outcomes in a quantitative manner for the first time.  In an article in the March 7, 2018 issue of Gutbliss.com written by Leslie Ann Berg, MSPH, she cited the mathematical risk relationship between highly processed foods and increased cancer risk this way.  “The findings showed that for every 10% increase (based on a 2,000 calorie diet) which is 200 calories in a highly processed food diet there is a 12% increase in cancer risk, with the greatest association found between processed foods and breast cancer risk.”

So, guys, this is not just about food.  It's as serious as the struggle between life and death.

One simple way to reclaim your agency is to understand the importance of indigestible fiber and introduce it, slowly in the beginning, into your system on a daily basis.  

 Foods that contain dietary fiber are widely accessible.  You'll find that all important nutrient in fruits, veggies, grains, nuts, seeds and even in the fatty avocado.  What makes fiber so special is the preventative care that it accords your bodies. The fact is that you do not produce the type of enzyme to facilitate digestion and absorption of fiber like it does  the other two macro nutrients Essential Fats and Protein.  Instead fiber travels through your digestive system unscathed and in the process performs all kinds of healthy heavy lift to protect your bodies from diseases, strengthens the immune system, regulates our blood sugar and cholesterol levels and even keeps us feeling full longer to prevent you from binge eating.

There are two types of fiber: soluble which absorbs water and creates a sticky gel in our gut to trap cholesterol and sugar and prevent them from being absorbed by the body which helps to maintain a good cardiovascular environment as well as control and pre-empt the onset of Type 2 diabetes. Another function is to strengthen the beneficial gut bacteria which results in boosting the immune system.  And if that were not enough, the gel-like substance that emerges when it absorbs water travels slowly through the digestive tract before expulsion and thus keeps you full during the long transit time thereby facilitating weight loss. 

 Insoluble fiber, on the other hand does not absorb water, rather it stays intact as it moves through the digestive system.  The movement is likened to a sweeping action that helps to clean the colon, to help prevent constipation and possibly colon cancer.  Other benefits are its effects on insulin resistance which reduces the onset of Type 2 diabetes and cholesterol which reduces the risk of heart disease.
